What is Zumba?

What is Zumba?

Zumba is dancing to mostly Latin music. Steps from all styles are incorporated: merengue, salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, tango, and others. There is no expectation that you will know any of these steps. You learn by imitating Ida as she dances.

Zumba® fuses hypnotic latin rhythms, and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba® Fanatics achieve long term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exhilarating hour of caloric-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life!

The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you've got Zumba®!

What do I wear?

What to wear

Wear comfortable clothes and footwear you can dance in. If you decide you want to continue with Zumba, it's advised to get a pair of dance sneakers. These have non-tacky soles so you can slide and pivot more easily on the floor. You can get these online, or Centerstage Dance Shop on University Ave. has some brands.

Bring a water bottle—there are water fountains in the studios.

What if I don't know how to dance?

How to dance

Some people obviously can dance, and some obviously can't. It doesn't matter. Some are restricted in their movements. Some people dance to a different drummer, so to speak, and that's totally fine. You will learn the steps, and there's no pressure or expectation of ability.

What if I'm out of shape/old/fat/stiff/clumsy?

Out of shape

It doesn't matter! People of all ages, sizes, and abilities do Zumba. Basically, the point is to keep moving for an hour. If all you do is march in place and do the hand motions, that's great! You should pace yourself so that you don't overdo it. You can decide for yourself how strenuous of a workout you're going to have.

Same songs

Is it always the same songs?

No. There are many songs and Ida varies them so you won't hear the same set twice. New songs get added, and some old songs get retired. Each song has its own choreography and that stays the same. It may look complicated at first, but soon you'll realize that there are a few patterns of steps that get repeated several times, and eventually you will learn them.

Will people laugh at me?

Will people laugh

People will be laughing, but not at you. People laugh because Ida is so much fun. Everyone has a great time.
